The Duck Downs

The Duck Downs

Like many small places around America Deming, NM has an event every year that draws the locals and visitors to their town.   In the case of Deming they have Duck Races!  A desert town in southern NM host the Great American Duck Race every year http://www.demingduckrace.com/.  I’ve lived in the region since 1976 and this is the 1st year I’ve attended.  It was goofy and fun.  Ginger and I took the little dogs in the RV and went up to Deming.  We knew dogs were not allowed at the races so we left the babies in the A/C in the RV while we went to the duck races.   We went to the Duck Mart (vendors) ate some yummy fair food, raced a duck and watched the Great American Tortilla Toss.  Better than Walmart and McDonalds!

Cheese, NM Green Chile and Tortilla, what could be better!

Of course I had to race a duck, but unfortunately my duck was more interested in taking a duck bath than winning the race.  But hey you are at the duck race, you have to race a duck!

To reward the girls for waiting for us in the RV we took a side trip to Rock Hound State Park http://www.newmexico.org/explore/state_parks/rockhound.php

That looks like a nice desert park — reminds me of Agua Caliente out our way.

I guess there are lots of geodes there so it is a very popular park. I’m going to have to go back some time and do some of the trails.

What GREAT fun! I’m jealous…I hope you enjoyed some of that yummy green chile for me! I can’t get that here in So Cal and that’s one of the things I miss most about home, the Mexican food!!!!

Up here, they do the same kind of thing with the festivals. We hit the tractor shows. One down, one to go next week. Then it is time for the wool festival in Sept. Zippy went to his first festival Saturday. It was cool enough that he got to enjoy all the people, but he was tired when he got home. After he got used to the situation, he was very well behaved. Sorry about your duck.

Glad Zippy had a good time, Bailey has become the party girl she wants to go everywhere. She will still bark at people if they come around a corner and surprise her but she likes crowds!

Duck races sounds like fun, but I just cannot picture it. Sorry yours didnt waddle for you. Hope you had enough great food consolation, sounds like you might have. Being a midwest girl, I havent had a chance to experience your landscape up close. the cactus is really lovely, and it looks like the dogs ahd a nice romp.

Don’t feel bad Dawn, I couldn’t picture it either, even hearing about it for years. One of those things “you had to be there”. It was pretty funny! I’m glad we went, we forget stuff in our own backyards sometimes.

Love that cactus, but I tell you – that truck in the tortilla toss picture bothered me. “Processed” Mexican food?? Sounds scary!!
