Best Friend

August 17, 2008

You have to love your best friend when she gives you for your 46th birthday a perfect gift.   Fertile-Focus, a personal Ovulation Microscope http://www.fertile-focus.com/  Just what a single gal needs.

Ok, so I opened my gift 3 days early but I didn’t realize that was what was in the envelope.  Leslie found out about this tool when she went to a breeder seminar.  I’m excited to have a new tool for breeding success. And I hope it helps us make some really wonderful puppies!  It really is a perfect gift and isn’t it great when your best friend know just what kind of gift will make your day.

Awwwww!

Here is part of the aftermath of Hurricane Dolly and the summer monsoons.  This is the “back forty” the yard that I use when I have to seperate dogs.  My Mema called these weeds careless weeds, I don’t know what they really are but they make my eyes water and now they are taller than me.

Congratulations Pippin!

Congratulations to Team Pippin on their recent AX and VCX titles!

If you aren’t familiar with the titles the are AKC Agility Excellent (AX)  and the VCX is the CWCCA’s  Versatility Excellent Certificate (VCX), a Cardigan must obtain a title in three of the five areas listed  Conformation, Obedience, Tracking, Herding and Agility with one at the Basic Level or higher, one at the Intermediate Level or higher, and one at the Top Level.

As you can see by the many letters behind her name, Pip is a very smart girl and Polly is a very smart trainer.  We are proud of our friends and are looking forward to the planned breeding with PJ.  Should be some pretty and smart puppies!

Bark in the Park again

We had another Bark in the Park with the El Paso Diablos.  PJ visited with folks, ate hot dogs and cookies and walked in the Dog Parade.  He also made friends with Bryan Cooksey one of the Diablos.

Doesn’t look like PJ is too impressed with Cooksey.

A little tongue…………….

Some of our Cardigan blog friends seem to be very interested in the state of the Cardigan tongue.  Here is the Solstice entry for comparison.

The Dance of the Rawhide

August 9, 2008

I really wish I had video of the rawhide dance

Not playing with a bone but napping in the RV

Not playing with a bone but napping in the RV

.  The kids get rawhide when they are in the house and I can keep an eye on who is doing what with them.  Henry loves the rawhides, he does the funniest thing, he grabs a rawhide, play bows to it, runs around it, play bows again, runs around it and then barks at it.  He hardly ever chews them but he loves to play with them.

A Public Service Announcement

August 7, 2008

With all the potential summer weather I thought I’d post this article I did several years ago for one of the breed magazines.  Never hurts to have a reminder.

Are you prepared?

Submitted by Jinnie Strickland

Fires, floods, hurricanes, blizzards, long term power outages.  Natural and man made disasters can spell trouble for you and your dogs.

The key to surviving these traumatic events is preparation.    Everyone should have an emergency kit available in case they have to evacuate their home.  This kit should always be on hand either in place that is easily accessible or in a vehicle.  Put it together now so that during times of stress it is one thing less to worry about.  Everyone should have a kit for their family and one for the dogs.  The following is a suggestion for your dog emergency kit.

Your Dog emergency kit should contain the following items:

Your emergency contact list, this information should be kept current at all times, make sure you include:

Your own contact information, cell phone numbers, email addresses

A friend or relative who lives outside of your area, preferably some one who knows your dogs

A Local contact

Veterinarian’s contact information

A local boarding facility

The local Animal control facility

A contact with your local or regional GSP or All breed club

Dog ID information:

Each dog should have a folder, notebook or file, which contains a copy of:

Copy of the dog’s identification records

AKC registration

Microchip number

DNA profile

Local licenses and copy of current vaccinations

Current photo and physical description and a premade poster for missing animals to attach current photos to if needed.

Emergency items:

You should be able to quickly locate crates for all dogs being evacuated.  Folding wire works best since they can be more easily stored.

A collar for each dog with an ID tag attached with your emergency contact information

Leashes short and long

Food and Water bowls

Dog rug or blanket

Muzzle

A tie out stake

Waste bags/pooperscooper/deodorizer for accidents

Familiar toys/treats/rawhide or hoof to fight off boredom

Vitamins and/or nutrition supplement (helps with stress)

Food and water, recommended minimum 7 day supply and water with a 5 year shelf life

First Aid kit

Most of us travel with a First aid kit, you may want to have an emergency kit that includes eye wash, Betadine, Peroxide, scissors, gauze and tape, quikstop, tweezers, anti diarrhea medicine, antibiotic cream, Epsom salts, baby wipes, vetwrap, Flea and tick treatments, 7 days worth of prescription meds or normal supplements.  Check with your veterinarian for more suggestions.

Now that you have your Emergency kit prepared take a moment and think about how you would get your dogs loaded and evacuated with less than 1 hours notice.   How would you leave your property, what are the routes you would need to use to evacuate?    Hopefully your emergency kit will never be needed but being prepared can help make an emergency safer and less stressful.

Walkway to the State Capital
Walkway to the State Capital

Janne and I stayed over today in case stuff was needed to close down the show site, but we were able to get it all done on Sunday night which left us a day in Sacramento as our flight didn’t leave until 5:30pm.  We both slept late, took our time getting packed and then went and did a little drive by site seeing.  We drove around Old Sacramento and had lunch at a Greek place by the old railroad station and then drove by the Governor’s Mansion (Did not see Arnold or Maria) and then took a walk in the Capital Park and enjoyed the rose garden.  It was sort of Deja vu since Janne and I also killed some time walking around the Boston Common in the same fashion.  I guess when we travel together we kill time walking in the parks.
