The Dude’s a CHIC
Well he will be once all the test results get turned in to OFA.
What is CHIC? This is from their website:
The Canine Health Information Center, also known as CHIC, is a centralized canine health database jointly sponsored by the AKC/Canine Health Foundation (AKC/CHF) and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). The CHIC, working with participating parent clubs, provides a resource for breeders and owners of purebred dogs to research and maintain information on the health issues prevalent in specific breeds. For more info please visit their website http://www.caninehealthinfo.org/
For the Cardigan Welsh Corgi the the Parent club requires for a CHIC number are:
- OFA Evaluation – OR
- OVC Evaluation – OR
- PennHIP Evaluation
- CERF Evaluation
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) DNA Test
- OFA evaluation from an approved laboratory
PJ, has been CERF’d several times but we will send an updated CERF next week. He is cleared thru his pedigree for PRA but I went ahead and submitted DNA for a DNA clearance. He is OFA Good for Hips and that information has been on file with OFA since he was 2 years old.
You may ask, If you have all the information already, why test for more? Part of being a responsible breeder is being open with your testing and letting puppy buyers and other breeders know what you are doing. Will I do CHIC numbers for all my dogs? No, will I test them? Yes and I’ll be happy to share results. Health tests are one of the many tools in a responsible breeders tool box. Will a dog with great health checks be bred? Maybe, Maybe not unless the rest of dog goes along with the checks. Will a dog with lesser heath scores be bred? Maybe if the attributes of that dog will make a better Cardigan.
Breeding is an Art and a Science, health checks is part fo the science.
They be Stars!
The puppy princesses have been attending Puppy K at K9 Funworks and this Saturday Einie and Mandy B passed their AKC Star puppy test http://www.akc.org/starpuppy/test_items_pledge.cfm. These two girls will soon be traveling to their new homes, Einie in Houston, TX and Mandy B in West Chester, PA and I hope that with completing their puppy class it gives them a good start in their new homes. The STAR puppy program is a good start towards their AKC CGC later in life. FiFi will take her test on another day, we ran out of time and I wanted to make sure the two girls who are moving on finished their course. FiFi will get lots of opportunities to visit with Dina at K9 Funworks, she would have passed on Saturday too if we had the time.

Load ’em up……….
Yes, it has begun…… packing well it has sort of begun. I picked the RV up from its toliet repair (I’m living in it for 10 days so it was a necessary repair) and it’s trip check up last night and immediately loaded a case of Diet Coke into it. So packing for the nationals has officially begun. Lot’s of dog show stuff is already in there so in reality the 1st thing I’ll do is inventory and then start packing.
The gang and I will be leaving next Thursday so that we can make the Houston area before it gets super late on Friday. Yes, for those who are unfamiliar with the great State of Texas, I live in El Paso, Texas and am driving to Houston, Texas and I’m leaving Thursday so I can get to shows that start on Saturday. The drive between El Paso and Houston is around 12 hours and it will most likely be more traveling with dogs, hence the Thursday departure.
PJ and Banner are entered in the San Jacinto Kennel Club shows on Saturday and Sunday. Frost is entered in Rally at the CWCCA nationals on Monday and Tuesday and PJ is entered in the CWCCA Megan competition on Tuesday night. Banner has sweeps on Wednesday, we will be cheering for puppy daddy dog Oz in the dog classes on Thursday. Friday is a busy day with all three girls, Banner, Bailey and Frost in classes and then PJ will be in Best of Breed on Saturday. Of course there are a gazillon other events associated with the nationals that we will be attending but the dogs are the focus. If you want more info on the CWCCA nationals or the club in general check here www.cardigancorgis.com
Just a blog warning, I’ll be trying to keep results somewhat current for the people who are not able to attend and if I use my blog I can update Facebook and Twitter at the same time so if you aren’t familar with dog show results just check in later to see if I posted anything that makes sense to you.
I’m ready to go even if I’m not ready yet!
AX Lucy
Big congrats to Rockie Top Fire and Ice and her breeder/team mate Polly on earning their AX today. Lucy is PJ’s red daughter, Frost’s littermate. Woo Hoo team Lucy!

Match Play on a lovely spring day
Today was the El Paso GSD club’s Fun match and what a lovely day. The 1st day of spring proved to be a warm one here in El Paso in the low 80s. The match was held the El Dorado Kennels and we had a nice place in the shade to park and set up.
The GSD club offered Conformation, Obedience and Rally. They also offered the baby puppy class so the poopies went along for the ride and FiFi got to play show dog and won a fun toy as BPIM. I also showed Banner and Sienna and Cody had Charlie and Bonnie in Obedience and Rally. Cody’s mom went along with Ginger, Cody and I and we had a good time. We also got to hang out with our Rally Buddy Conny and her lab Jake. It was their 1st foray into competition and they did great getting 1st place in Pre Novice and Rally Novice A. Cody and Charlie got 2nd in Novice A and Rally Advanced A and Bonnie got a 2nd in Rally Novice B. The GSD club also put on a nice lunch for all the exhibitors.
We like the time change
The nice thing about Daylight savings time is More Daylight! It has been very nice this week to come home and hang with the doggies in the yard and the puppies think it is much more fun. It was over 80 degrees today, lovely. It has been such a joy to come home this week and sit on the porch and watch them play. Puppy Therapy ahhhhhhh.

A new home for Betty
I knew the right home for Betty would come along and I was right! Miss Betty will be joining Ann and her family in Pennsylvania after the Cardigan Nationals. Seemed like it was meant to be, Ann needs Betty and Betty needs Ann and Cardi friend Mary offered Betty a ride from Houston to the East Coast so it looks like it worked out perfectly!
So we will be traveling to Houston with 3 Cardi puppy princesses and coming home with just one as Einie will be going to her new people Tara and Tim in Houston too.
Hopefully the next photos that show up will show Ears Up! on everyone. The Princess 3 are currently wearing their crowns (Einie just has a little piece of tape so that she didn’t get left out).
All Cardigans All the time or the Nationals Numbers
Prelim numbers were posted on the Trent Foy website : http://www.foytrentdogshows.com/ for the CWCCA Nationals next month. Solstice has entries in the red classes. PJ is also entered in the Megan Competition and he and Banner are entered in the all breed shows the weekend before the nationals and we are going to try and make the Herding Instinct test on Sunday with Frost. To say we are going to busy is an understatement. I’m excited! I’m going to get to spend a week with my BFF and my other dear friends. And if this isn’t enough, Einie will be meeting her new family too. 25 days until departure!
