The Flea is 2 years old today!  Happy birthday fuzzy face!

Wow you must make a lot of money………….

February 14, 2011

Took the poopies to the vet today for their second set of shots, lots of folks do their own but ever since Lindy got Parvo after I did shots myself  I now always just go to the clinic for their shots.

While I was there with the babies someone asked me about how much I charged for puppies and when I told them they said “wow you must make a lot of money”.  When I tried to explain that breeding and raising puppies correctly has costs but I could tell they were no longer listening but looking at 3 puppies $800 puppies and thinking “WOW” $2400 sitting in my lap.  I could see the $$$ signs forming above their head and I quickly jumped in with a but……………  The last time I was at the vet I spent $900 and when they asked why I was able to complete my comments about the cost of breeding a litter correctly.

I told them about the money it took to show and finish my girl’s Championship, I told them about the cost of the pre breeding health tests (hips, eyes etc) and about the stud fee plus you have to prepare for vet bills during the birth.  I broke it down  for them a bit:

$800 Stud Fee  +  $900 in vet bills (Xrays and whelping assistance) = $1700

To date $250 for vet fees, microchips and registration fees etc:  =$1950

I had a litter of 4 puppies and I’m keeping one since the whole reason I breed is to make better puppies not more puppies.  This gives me 3 to “sell”  for my puppy price of $800 each so we are now at $2400 – $1950 = $450 profit.  But as they say on TV, “wait there is more”.  I had expenses for the whelping, lots of laundry and of course the care and feeding of these puppies so maybe I’ll get close to breaking even this time and not lose money.

Of course if I did it for the money I wouldn’t be doing it this way and I would not be able to offer the guarantees and support I offer my puppy people.  So I really think the next time someone asked me about how much my puppies cost, unless they are wanting a Solstice puppy I just think I’ll evade the question.

I’m know there are breeders, good breeders, who do make money on their litters, I just haven’t been lucky that way yet and someday I’ll have a nice easy litter that comes with very little expense and it will help make up some of the losses from previous litters.  I am looking forward to that day.  It will be nice when the dogs can pay some of their own expenses. I also know good breeders who charge more and charge less and it works for them.  But the morale of the story is good breeders spend money to insure they are improving the breed and giving puppies the best start they possible can and when things go right they make money but that isn’t the reason they breed.   If someone is looking to make extra money, breeding dogs should not be on the list of high profit endeavors.

I wasn’t sure I was going to post this to the blog, we dog breeders don’t like to talk about money (unless we are moaning about how much we spend) most of us really don’t want to know how much our beloveds cost.   I thought what the heck if it will shed some light on our practices and make it known why well bred puppies cost more than the ones for sale in the local parking lot or on the craigs I might be doing a good thing.

Comments and questions are always welcome.

Hi, I’m Betty and I’m ready for my own home.

February 8, 2011

We are calling her Betty, Solstice Pinup Girl, her puppy name was Candy of the Holiday Treats.

Candy

After careful puppy evaluation we have decided that the best fit for Candy/Betty will be a companion home.  This is a pretty puppy who temperamentally will be best suited to be a family companion.  She is sweet and cuddly and really interested in being with the people.  She really likes playing with the big dogs but if a person comes into view she would rather be with the people.  She is the 1st one to have her feet up on the pen asking to get OUT!

Candy

pick me! pick me!

So if you are interested in a very cute and cuddly Black and White Cardi girl she will be available to a companion home.  See our kennel policies in the sidebar for more information about puppy placement.

Baby it’s was cold outside…….. But it’s not now!

February 6, 2011

Last week we had record-setting cold, we broke records that were set in 1962 and before.  It was COLD!  We had snow and ice, rolling power blackouts and just plain nasty.  We are desert people/dogs and we don’t do cold.  Neither does our town.  We are currently still under water restrictions because of the freezing weather.

The trouble with bad weather and 8 week old puppy is they get bored and after spending the weekend at Arylan the weekend before and learning about OUTSIDE they were really wild but today it was a typical SW winter day, sunny and 57 degrees so before we start watching football we spent some time OUTSIDE.

We have lift off!

Since the babies got to play in the big yard they took advantage of checking out some of our agility equipment.

Fifi getting a hoop point of view

Frost has been having a good time playing with the babies, she is such a sweet girl, they love their auntie Frosty.

Soon it will be time to watch the superbowl at Grandmas so they are napping.  I have to say it is weird to be at home one Superbowl weekend.  Normally I am at the Hobbs KC shows starting off the show season but I chose not to go this year because of the babies and with the crazy weather I am so glad I didn’t enter, talk about cold, it would have been freezing in the RV.  It is normally pretty cold there but this year brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hope our “winter” is over so the poopies can enjoy more time outside.

Fifinella

There was a 3 way tie in the voting for puppy names with Fly Girl, Pinup Girl and Victory Garden.  Those were my favorites too.

Since all the show dogs at my house have a flying theme I’m going to go with Solstice Fly Girl for the Fudgie puppy girl.  I really didn’t like Wasp as a call name so did some WASP research and found out that they trained in Texas at what is now Houston Hobby Airport and that their mascot was a female Gremlin named Fifinella.

So as of today Miss Fudgie puppy will be Fifinella or FiFi.

The female gremlin Fifinella, conceived by Roald Dahl and drawn by Walt Disney, was used as the official WASP mascot and appeared on their shoulder patches.

The story of Fifinella began in 1942 when Roald Dahl, an ex-RAF-pilot, wrote The Gremlins, a fairy tale about the hazards of combat flying; in this incarnation, the word “fifinella” only refers to female gremlins as opposed to any specific one. Dahl took the name from the great “flying” filly, Fifinella, who won the Epsom Derby and Epsom Oaks in 1916, the year Dahl was born.

Gremlins were imaginary beings endowed with potent magical powers. According to the lore, these mischievous, elf-like creatures were responsible for all kinds of mechanical failures and other problems. They would also be there to tickle the pilots and bombardiers right at the moment they were lined up for a good run, threatening them with last-second errors of judgment. At first, these gremlins were seen as enemy agents, but it was realized that they played their pranks anywhere, anytime, on anyone — regardless of nationality. Although gremlins predated Murphy’s Law that “whatever can go wrong, will”, they were obviously motivated by the same principles.

Help with naming the Poopies – a poll

February 2, 2011

Two of the four poopies now have fancy names.  Cookie Monster has become Einie, Solstice Manhattan Project.  Nog who was Harry’s pick puppy and will carry his co-breeders kennel name is now Arylan Custom Goldwing, call name still pending.

So that leaves Fudge and Candy.   I’m still planning on using the Pearl Harbor Day/WWII theme for the 3 girls.  These were the earlier suggestions:

Pinup Girl,  Fly Girl,  USO Girl,  Silverwing,  Tokyo Rose,  Pearl Harbor,  Donut Dolly,  South Pacific & Victory Garden

Now I’ve thrown out Tokyo Rose and Silverwing  and USO Girl from consideration.

I set up a poll so let’s see what the most popular choice of the blog readers will be, what do you all think?

Who goes where?

January 31, 2011
This weekend took the poopies on their 1st “road trip” we traveled to Albuquerque, NM to visit Kennel Arylan, home of Oz, their puppy daddy. They were wonderful travelers, road quiet, didn’t mess in their crate, I was so proud of them.  4+ hours each way and they were troopers.   This was the “who goes where” trip, where Harry and I made our choices.

Lots of new things this weekend for the babies, they had their first trip outside.  They played with the blue puppies that are a couple months older.  The met Bea the resident cat, dug in the dirt, ate inappropriate things and all and all had a big adventure.

So for those that have been following along here is how the puppy picking went:

Nog stayed behind at Arylan as Harry’s pick

Fudge will be staying at Solstice

Cookie is now Einie and she will be going to Houston to be Tara and Tim’s performance partner and wonder puppy.  Einie is going to be following in her momma Lindy’s footsteps of being named after a famous man.  Lindy is named after Charles Lindbergh and Einie will be named after Albert Einstein.   The current choice for her registered name is Solstice The Manhattan Project or something along those lines.  We will see if her new people have any more ideas.

Candy is still going to be evaluated to see what type of home will be best suited for her personality.
