Tis the season

May 23, 2010

For Watermelon!  It was 98 here yesterday and I’m not sure how hot it was today since I never saw the weather.  We had Lindy’s Championship party tonight.  I made a great salad with grilled chicken, dried cherries, feta, spinach and swiss chard and lemon thyme from my garden.  A lovely bottle of wine from my favorite CA winery Cakebread Cellars and Watermelon for the dogs.  Can’t think of a better way to spend Saturday night.

Mandy, Banner and Bonnie enjoyed their 1st watermelon, little Mandy didn’t even hesitate as soon as it hit the ground she was right in the middle of it.  She takes after her daddy PJ aka Porky Joe.

Team Solstice/Arylan did have a Red Letter day on Sunday, Harry’s young blue boy Otto was WD/BOW for 5 pts. Our young puppy girls Lily and Banner were 1 and 2 in the 6-9 puppy class with Lily going RWB, in the winner’s class we also had Frost from the AOH class, Bailey from BBE and then Lindy from Open. Lindy needed 4pts to finish so I was happy with the extra 🙂 After I started breathing again, Cody and I took Lindy and two of her kids, Charlie and Bonnie over to the AHBA instinct test and all 3 “passed” and had a good time bossing the bossy ewes around.

Sienna aka the Flea was RWB that day too.

The other days belonged to other folks but we are proud of our team!

Don’t Steal the Joy

May 7, 2010

I’m a thief, I stole this from Holly’s blog over at Vision.  A good read and reminder!

DON’T YOU DARE STEAL MY JOY by Connie Cleveland

On the occasion of my tenth anniversary, my husband asked me how I wanted to celebrate. I asked that we take a very dear friend, my adopted grandmother and one of the greatest of all the great southern ladies, out to dinner with us. At dinner, my husband, Brian, presented me with a diamond ring. It was gorgeous and I was speechless, but even as I thanked him, I worried about the expense and extravagance of such a gift. As if he knew that the next line belonged to my grandmother, my husband excused himself from the table. He was barely out of sight when she reached across the table and grabbed me by the shoulder, “I know what you’re thinking, I know you think he couldn’t afford it and it’s too extravagant. I don’t care if he had to put a second mortgage on the house to buy it, don’t you steal his joy! It’s beautiful. Accept it as the token of his love that it is and say nothing about how he shouldn’t have bought it for you.” Then she repeated, “Don’t you dare steal his joy!” That was the end of the conversation. She sat back in her seat, smiled at my returning husband, and we had a lovely dinner. I took her advice and put my reservations out of my mind. The ring has never come off my finger, but most importantly, I learned a wonderfully important lesson, never to steal another man’s joy.

Are you a joy stealer? ”

You know if my dog hadn’t gone down on the sit, I would have won the class”, said, unfeelingly, to the winner.

“I sure didn’t think your dog worked that high a score.”

“I can’t believe you placed, I thought Jane Oneup and her dog would beat you.”

“I thought I had that class won! My dog had a great performance,” said to the winner.

“Isn’t that judge an idiot? I can’t believe the dogs he put up!” said to the winner.

“Boy, aren’t you glad Mrs Winallthetime wasn’t here today or you might not have won.”

“You passed that Master test because the water blind was so easy.”

“That was the stupidest set of water marks I’ve ever seen. No trial should end that easily,” said to the winner.

Do you discourage or encourage fellow competitors? Do you tell them their goals are too lofty and their dreams too big? Are you trying to be helpful or trying to keep them from accomplishing something that you never had the ability or perseverance to do yourself? It is equally as harmful to steal joy by destroying the dream.

“No Basset Hounds get UD’s,” said to the owner of the Bassett in Utility class.

“I’ve never seen a Rottweiler that could do fronts and finishes”, said to the owner of the Rottweiler practicing fronts and finishes.

“Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a UD and a Master Hunter? Do you know how few people have ever done it?” said to the first time dog owner setting out to do both.

When FC AFC OTCH Law Abiding Ezra had both his field championships and 65 OTCH points including all the necessary first places, someone had the guts to come up to me, his owner, trainer and handler and say, “No dog will ever be a field champion and an obedience champion.” My jaw drops when I think about it. Isn’t it unfortunate that I remember this attempt at stealing my joy much more than I remember all the cards and letters and congratulations I received when those last 35 points were earned? If you are willing to destroy someone’s dream, perhaps you don’t realize that it is the JOY of pursuing the dream that keeps the dreamer motivated, not just reaching the accomplishment.

My husband and I travel and compete together. I remember an event, early in our relationship when I watched his Doberman fail articles. “Darn it, ” I said, as he came out of the ring,” she didn’t even try to find the right one!” “Oh”, he replied, “but, weren’t her heeling and signals wonderful?” Unknowingly, I had almost stolen his joy. He was celebrating the improvement on the exercise that had been giving him trouble, and I was focused on the failure. Since that experience, Brian and I have learned that the best response to a questionable performance, “What did you think?” That way, if the handler is excited about some aspect of the performance, you can share that excitement. If the handler is disappointed in another aspect, you can share the disappointment. You are safely removed from being a joy stealer.

I hope you have a lot of dreams and goals for your dogs in (the coming year). Undoubtedly there will be moments of disappointment as you venture through the landmines of injury, failures and other setbacks. Remember that the joy of the journey is worth the difficulties along the way and don’t let anyone steal that joy. Guard it well and at the end of the road you can own it and revel in it with all the other memories of the trip.

*Permisssion to cross post* a great read for all dog competitors.

Recycling

May 3, 2010

Here is my garden, we recycled kitty litter containers for the pots and the old tire HAD Watermelon for Watermelon Sunday planted but the “helpers’ helped themselves to the lovely dirt to dig in and ate some of the plants with young veggies already on them.  I had to put some of the plants up higher to keep the walking recyclers from eating the goodies.

That is what I get for feed the dogs veggies.  Hopefully the summer will be full of zucs and tomato and fresh herbs.

The helpers 🙂

Saturday at the Pet walk

May 2, 2010

I know we have been absent from bloggerland for awhile but with a new job (with new hours) 8 dogs and a pinched nerve in my neck/arm/hand I haven’t really been up to much blogging plus there isn’t much going on.

Saturday, Cody (person) Charlie, Bonnie and Banner (Cardis) and I went to the local Humane Society fund raiser walk.  We had a good time, it was cool and windy but a fun time was had by all.  It was Banner’s 1st public outing and my soft and gooey girl did great and I think she had fun.

The dogs did a little marketing for State Farm, met Scobby Do and a bunch of other dogs (som with manners and some without)  and people.  It was a fun time.

Who’s your daddy?

April 4, 2010

After all the picking and sorting there are 3 PJ kids available for companion homes.

Obie (PJ x June Carter)

Ozzy (PJ x June Carter)

Bess (PJ x Addy)

This and that and the AOH class

April 4, 2010

We had a good time in Tucson even if it wasn’t as successful as I would have liked.

Charlie

I had a bunch entered, Sienna the Griff, Lindy, Bailey, Frost and Charlie were also all entered.  We ended up with a major RWB on Sienna and Charlie was RWD two of the three days.  On Saturday I won all the blue ribbons 🙂 but no purple ones.  But everyone showed nice in strong competition.  Another plus was that the puppy girls Banner and Mandy were super good on their 1st road trip.

Banner and Mandy hanging in the RV

I entered the amateur Owner Handler class for the 1st time.  I’m proud to show my own dogs so I thought “why not”.  I was disappointed in the response I got from some of the judges.  Sienna, Lindy and Charlie were entered in the AOH with Frost entered in 12-18 and Bailey in BBE.  One day the Brussels Griffon judge spent a lot of time explaining her ring procedures to me (single entry in AOH).  I watched the rest of the entry and she did not do that with the other classes.   In Cardis the next day when handing me the RWD ribbon the judge said “you won’t be eligible for this class much longer” I took that as a compliment on my handling but I was very disappointed that the judges treated the class like it was Novice handler class.  It is a shame that the folks who are supposed to know the rules don’t.

I’m not sure if I will use the class again.  I have 4 bitches to enter at our next show and I might just for scheduling purposes but I don’t know if I’ll use it as an Owner Handler showcase class which is what it was supposed to be.

We are still here

March 20, 2010

A lot and nothing has been going on at Solstice.  The Lindy x PJ kids turned one and both Bailey and Bonnie came in season the next day.  Then Seinna came in season followed by Wicca and now Frost.  Poor Daddy dog PJ.

The puppy girls are growing up well, they are a crack up.  Banner is a silly girl who loves toys, is great at fetch and barking with a toy in her mouth.  Mandy is fearless and I’m always saving her from herself.

Of course the dogs are still trying to get used to our new schedule.  I have a new job (same company, new assignment) which gives me different work hours.

Next weekend we are going to Tucson for 3 days of dog shows.  We have majors Saturday and Sunday so I have 3 girls to show on those days.  Just the two on Friday.  Plus Sienna and Cody has Charlie.  I entered Amature Owner Handler for the 1st time so I’ll see how that goes.  I’m proud to be a Breeder Owner Handler and an Amature Owner Handler so I hope the judges will look at dogs in those classes.

Has Spring Sprung?

March 8, 2010

It was such a warm day today that I filled up the pool for the dogs.  As you can see they were happy to take a dip!

Mandy who of course has never seen a pool took to it like a duck to water.

The little girls got to meet big Wicca today.  Banner kept her distance but Mandy had no fear until Wicca growled at her and made her cry.  Of course she forgot that Wicca made her cry and tried to get in her face again and had to be rescued from herself.

The other sign that spring is close is the fig tree is starting to bud out and the Cardis are starting to chew on the poor thing.  The love the fig bush.

We interupt our regular program……………..
