Whelping stuff
It is hard to believe that it has been a month already since whelping day. Since I haven’t had a litter in almost 7 years there were a lot of things I needed and I’m very happy with the stuff I got for this litter.
I love the Dura-whelp box that I ordered, a bit of an expense but well worth it. I think the next time I’m going to order their heating system since I always worried about the heating pad. I also used their box liners which help with clean up.
The other things that have come in handy are the Snuggle Safe, microwave heating disc, the puppies loved to snuggle with it to keep warm. I also have used the thin fleece pads in the box, easy to wash and good tractions for the little ones.
I started weighing the babies on my food scale in a cake pan but that quickly became a chore as they got wiggly. so I got a puppy sling and scale with worked great.
Of course one of the basic things was a package of 80 shop towels from Costco, being white you can see any little thing on them and they wash as bleach well and you can toss them if they get too nasty.
Once I started feeding them our flying saucer pan has been great and my brother gave me an immersion blender a while back it is fabulous for making puppy mash.
Puppies are a lot of work so anything that makes it easier is wonderful.
What size dura-whelp did you get? They look like very cool boxes, that’s for sure.
I got the medium, but a large would also work if you had a big girl, seems to be working ok even if there were more pups I think it would be fine. It is super easy to keep clean and very easy to set up and take down, storing will be a breeze.
I appreciate this post SO much, Jinnie…. I’ll be starting to collect things for a (hopefully) fall litter, and the sooner I can start picking little things up, the better…
Any other “must haves” that you wish you had picked up??
We are looking forward to your litter 🙂
The other thing I made sure I had on hand were french tubes and Esbilac in case of tube feeding. Get some one to teach you how before your babies arrive it is kind of scary the 1st time. Also if you are going to have to be on your knees outside the box get a garden kneeler, I’m not kidding my knees were killing me for days.
It’s about time to switch over from the kitchen scale. They won’t stay in the pan anymore, unless I catch them right after they’re eaten and they’re comatose.
They don’t tell you about needing proper seating. My back hurt for a week from leaning over. I said something about throwing my back out delivering puppies and got laughed at. 😉
